In commemoration of the 1834 Emancipation Act, which marks the abolition of slavery in the British Virgin Islands, an annual August Festival is held attracting visitors from around the world. The Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant which is one of the many events held during the two-week Festival, specifically benefits our young women by providing them with an opportunity to achieve their educational aspirations through a scholarship for tertiary education, and enhancing their personal and professional growth while gaining valuable experience that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Abigail Hyndman is Miss BVI 2011

Judges of the Miss BVI 2011 Pageant chose 21 year old Abigail Hyndman as the Territory's Miss BVI following a stiff competition last evening, July 31 at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex. The pageant was held under the theme, 'A Royal Affair'.

Hyndman who is a Biology/Pre-Med major attending the Xavier University of Louisiana, also copped Miss Poise.

The first runner up went to contestant #2 Ciara Christian and second runner up went to contestant #4 Shanett Browne.

The other two contestants were #1 Riva Williams and #5 Washeema Guishard.

Miss Congeniality went to contestant #5 Washeema Guishard, Miss Photogenic - #5 Washeema Guishard, Miss Poise - #3 Abigail Hyndman, Miss Intellect [interview and on stage question] - #4 Shanett Browne, Cultural Costume - #4 Shanett Browne, Best BVI Promo & Talent - #5 Washeema Guishard, Best Swimwear - #5 Washeema Guishard and Best Evening Wear - #5 Washeema Guishard.

The winner of the LIME Miss Popularity contest was contestant #5 Washeema Guishard.

Miss BVI 2011, Abigail Hyndman is an aspiring Anesthesiologist and has numerous interests such as reading, exercising, travelling swimming and meeting new people. She was also first runner up in the Miss St. John Pageant 2010.

Miss BVI Promotes Territory in Germany

Reigning Miss BVI, Abigail Hyndman recently spent a few days helping the BVI Tourist Board to promote the Territory at the ITB Berlin tourism trade show, which is known to bring together the leading think tank of the global tourism industry.

During the show which concluded on March 12, Hyndman interacted with a number of key players in the industry, as well as persons who stopped by the BVI booth.

Hyndman sat down to speak with BVI Platinum News about the visit to Germany, the upcoming Miss Caribbean World pageant and her reign as Miss BVI thus far.

ITB Berlin is known to attract more than 170,000 visitors, among them 108,000 trade visitors and over 10,000 exhibitors from 180 countries. Caribbean Destinations joined with the Caribbean Tourism Organization in what is called the Caribbean Village. Each destination had their stand-alone booth where one on one meetings were held.

Caribbean Destinations such as Jamaica, Aruba, St. Martin, Turks & Caicos, British Virgin Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Bermuda, Barbados, Cuba, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Bonaire, Haiti, St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Curacao all attend the global event.

UPBEAT AND FOCUSED, ABIGAIL HYNDMAN BEGINS REIGN...

TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS – 30th September 2011- Two months after securing the title win to become Miss BVI 2011, Abigail Hyndman is making a name for herself and causing heads to turn; not for her height of five feet, nine inches; but for her winning personality, enthusiasm and motivation.

“My journey to receiving the crown was a very long and emotional one. The second that they called my name as the winner, a mixture of emotions just came pouring out. It was that of joy and contentment,” the beauty queen said.

Having dreamed of entering the Miss BVI pageant since childhood, garnering the crown became a significant accomplishment for this pre-med student who would’ve entered her senior year at Xavier University this Fall. However, instead of returning to her studies, the aspiring anesthesiologist deferred her last year to dedicate her time and energy into her new role and responsibilities as Miss BVI.

“This is my full time job. I have taken the year off from school and have committed myself to being here and executing my reign to the best of my ability. I don’t have any regrets about it; I knew that going in I would have to make certain sacrifices,” Miss Hyndman said. “I am a BVIslander, this is my home, and this is a place I always come back to. There is so much history about who I am. My family is here and I have really put aside everything in my life to represent the BVI. I think I can demonstrate how much I love this country and how much I’m invested in being a great representative for my country.”
